We may have an addendum to Plan B.
Hubby had a very important phone call today about a potential job. Not a great job, mind you, but a job nonetheless. And by all accounts (er, Hubby’s account, at least), it went very, very well.
Apparently, the person most concerned about the fact that my husband has not yet found a job is not his former adviser, not anyone who played a significant role in the attainment of his PhD or advised him on his dissertation. It is, instead, the sweet old lady who heads the program. She’s the one who met with a fellow distinguished professor to discuss Hubby’s future. She’s the one who sent out emails to see if other programs had a place for him. She’s the one who may have found him a job.
Connections are so important in this business. Up to this point, Hubby had made lots of connections–lots of people who love his research and think he’s a wonderful guy. Unfortunately, none of those people had any available money or influence to get him a post-doc or tenure-track position. He needed some help, and he may have gotten it at last.
It’s a small but significant step up from what he had been doing at this university, but it may be the boost he needs. (Assuming nothing better comes along–and, at this point, let’s face it, why would we have reason to believe it will?) And if it happens, it will happen in January.
Finally, we may have something to look forward to.
Not only that, but Hubby has now changed his mind about IVF. We have an appointment with Dr. C on Friday to discuss options, one of which might be squeezing in a cycle of IVF before January. (Yaaaaaayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I’ll definitely let you know how it goes.
I’m not sure I could be much happier about all of this. It’s still not set in stone, but we might actually be moving forward. Getting somewhere. Imagine that!
As always, thank you all for your support and for believing that something good was on the way, even when I didn’t. Love you guys!
